It's that time again. I love watching movies and I am going to review some of them that have been on my Netflix queue or have coming through the movie theaters. I am going to review a couple of movies hopefully you, my readers, will maybe watch one or two that I will review. Some I will suggest, others I will warn you about. Let's get going:
The Lawnmower Man - 1992 - Jeff Fahey, Pierce Brosnan, Directed by Brett Leonard
This movie is a lost treasure that I had seen a trailer for this while I was a young one watching either Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or Suburban Commando. Either way, this movie was a surprise to me. The premise is that a computer engineer (Pierce Brosnan) is designing a military weapon for a government contract, but it's one of those universal soldier type deals. The beginning of the movie starts with a monkey being the subject of one of the experiments, but this monkey goes haywire and starts to kill the security guards and tries to escape. Enter Jobe, (Jeff Fahey) who is a mentally retarded man who mows peoples lawns, reads comic books, plays with kids, lives in a shed behind a church and is pretty much Slingblade without being a murderer...yet. Pierce Brosnan brings Jobe in and lets him play some computer games with the neighbor kid since he is at a 4th grade reading level. After some research, Brosnan decides to let Jobe become an experimental rat and maybe try his experimental work on Jobe's brain. After such experiments, Jobe starts to become smarter, more attractive, and learns to become socially competitive. However, his intelligence begins to go too far and Jobe develops the power to read minds and control other peoples minds. Pierce Brosnan tries to stop Jobe from taking over the world and becoming a destructive force, but it will end with one of the more weirder endings. One of the more weirder sex scenes that happens in virtual reality is okay, but there is also a real life sex scene. There was a sequel that I might go see, but I didn't hear anything positive about it and I don't know if it's worth the time on my Netflix queue. I recommend this movie, but only for people who enjoy 1990's cyber-thrillers that are not considered serious in any lighting.
Machete - 2010 - Danny Trejo, Michelle Rodriguez, Jessica Alba, Jeff Fahey, Robert DeNiro, Cheech Marin, Lindsey Lohan, Steven Seagal, lots of mexicans.
This movie was one of my more anticipated movies of the summer. It was a preview during the Robert Rodriguez/Quentin Tarantino Grindhouse movies and I instantly fell in love with the idea of Danny Trejo becoming a protagonist that is an Ex-Mexican Federale who is now working as a gardener and day laborer in Texas. Alba is playing a Mexican who now works for the INS, Michelle Rodriguez is a coffee truck worker who has a secret identity and helps Mexicans get through their day, Robert DeNiro plays a Senator who is Anti-Immigration, Jeff Fahey plays DeNiro's chief of staff, Lindsey Lohan plays Fahey's daughter who is herself pretty much, and Cheech Marin plays Machete's brother, who is also a priest. Machete takes a job to assassinate Robert Deniro, who doublecrosses Machete trying to boost his voting polls in his election. Machete, who uses the help of Alba, Rodriguez, and his brother Cheech, is going to try and get back at Fahey/DeNiro with the help of some of Robert Rodriguez's regulars. A very gruesome movie with lots of violence and sex. Tons more violence than sex. If you like Rob-Rod's movies then you will love this. I must say this is a great movie and it was great in theaters. Except when a father brings an infant to a movie. That's when it is not at a good idea.
The Town - 2010 - Ben Affleck, Jeremy Renner, Jon Hamm, Blake Lively, Rebecca Hall
This is a Boston built film. Ben Affleck directed, stars, and wrote some of this movie and shoots it in Boston. He and Jeremy Renner are part of a gang that robs armored trucks and banks in Charlestown. Rebecca Hall is the love interest that also is one of the females who has her bank robbed. Ben Affleck keeps up with her and falls in love with her. Jeremy Renner makes sure that Ben doesn't give too much information or anything that will get them blown to Jon Hamm who is an FBI agent. Blake Lively, who is Ben Affleck's trashy baby-mama, did a great job of playing a Charlestown skank, if there is even a talent for that. But the drugged-up, dead-beat, coked-out-of-her-mind look really fit for her. Lots of violence, sex, drug-use, and drama make for a great Boston based crime thriller. Not as exciting as Heat or The Departed, but it will definitely be remembered as a great crime thriller in recent years.
